Lester Collins, Wave Hill Chairs
1960s / later production
Painted wood, screws

Pair of Wave Hill chairs by Lester Collins. Initially designed in the 1960s for Innisfree Gardens in Millbrook, New York, the landscape architect, Collins, allowed the chair to be produced for Wave Hill, a public garden in the Bronx. Wave Hill also produced instructions for the garage builder to complete the chair at home. The chair and instructions were sold for $125 in 1986 which would be equivalent to $360 today.

As outdoor chairs go, they were designed to become weathered with the elements and rot adding to their form through subtraction. One chair bears a substantial loss to the seat and some give to the back rest. They each sit comfortably and stably.

The chair was based on Gerrit Rietveld’s 1918 red and blue chair but feels more like some utopian parallel evolution than an homage.
